We didn’t really know what we were doing yet, so leaned heavily on our very talented friends. The fruit for this wine hails from the Foss Valley area on Atlas Peak, which is a cooler pocket on an otherwise warm mountain. It was fermented in an open-top Rousseau oak tank and aged for 16 months in neutral French oak barrels. Unlike serious Pinot, Barbera just wants to have fun! We weren’t quite sure how to make it, so we treated it like Pinot Noir. Which is to say, we destemmed 75% of it, trod the remaining clusters, and handled the whole thing very gently. It was fermented in an open top bin and aged for 20 months in neutral French oak barrels. The wine possesses an exuberant nose of sappy red berries, violets, and brown spices. The palate features a juicy mouthful of red berries run through by a vibrant, thrilling acidity. It came from the Poseidon vineyard in south Carneros. The vineyard runs along the bay and boats dock mere feet from where vines are planted! The 2012 was fermented and aged in two French barrels – a neutral and a one year old. The wine is drinking beautifully today, and offers a nose of ripe pear, apple blossoms, cashews, and oyster shells. Compared to our Napa Valley Pinot Noir, this wine is far more bright and structured, with a proud, crunchy acidity that lifts up the bright red berry core. Scents of crushed flowers, dried mushrooms, and blood ring the fruit on the nose. On the palate the fruit is complemented by a savory tone, and the strong acidity keeps the wine lifted and fresh. Wound up for a long time, it has only recently started to relax.
